![]() ![]() By that point, with $157 million domestic in 17 days (5.6x its opening), even George Lucas knew the ship had sailed. It would make $33 million over New Year's. Over Christmas weekend, it earned another $35 million. ![]() Opening wide with rave reviews and massive buzz, Titanic opened with a solid (but not spectacular) $28 million on its opening weekend. Yes, the first trailer, attached to Breakdown in May of 1997, showed promise, but it wasn't until critics and (obviously) audiences saw the Kate Winslet/Leonardo DiCaprio disaster melodrama that everyone realized that the $200 million had been well spent. Originally intended as a summer release, Paramount and Fox pushed back James Cameron's wildly over-budgeted and allegedly doomed Titanic into the Christmas-of-1997 slot. The domestic earnings, $136 million, was enough to push Star Wars past E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial to again make Star Wars the biggest domestic earner ever after 15 years of getting displaced by the likes of Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park and The Lion King. All told, they earned $471 million worldwide, but A New Hope earned most of that. The films had remastered picture and sound as well as some very controversial changes and additions to the original blockbusters. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm released the Star Wars trilogy into theaters in January, February and March of 1997. ![]()
